Ghosts in Sunlight

In the conceptual project Ghosts in Sunlight, Magda Parasidis reimagines the public housing she has known as home as a space of poetic revelation and political resistance. The artwork originates from photographs taken in and around the Marine Terrace housing project in Queens, NY from 1992-2019. Parasidis photographs this urban landscape as both a site of economic segregation and one of spiritual/political awakening. The language-based work, rooted in critique, considers the connections between the personal, the political, and the aesthetic. In her work, the aesthetics of containment and surveillance invite the viewer to contemplate their emotional responses to race, class and difference. Parasidis uses her lens as an instrument to make visible that the exclusionary structures inherent in the lives of the urban poor are narratives of public concern. She does this by offering us a meditative visual space in which to investigate the politics of poverty.
